North East based DIY brands Unison Music & Events and Spotlight Music came together to produce a joint project aiming to encourage collaboration between local musicians and spread the word about their fantastic music at the same time. The Crossover Covers project was born out of the desire to engage with, and support, local musicians during the UK’s Covid-19 Lockdown, a time which proved to be a challenge for the North East’s creative scene.
What began as a simple idea, to ask musicians to cover a song from a fellow regional artist, soon became a hugely uplifting project which allowed our creative scene to show their appreciation for one another’s craft in a fun and creative way. Running from April until the end of July, the cover songs were presented as a video series which culminated in twenty nine fantastic tracks each with their own unique style and spin on an artist they admire.
Now, having seen the potential and overwhelming positivity gather around the project, we decided to take things further with a drive to use the project to raise money and awareness for a valuable local cause. Fifteen tracks from the series have been selected to form a digital compilation album that is available to purchase on Bandcamp for a suggested minimum donation of £5, with all proceeds going to Crossings Community Group.
Crossings Community Group is a Newcastle based charity who provide a safe space for Asylum Seekers, Refugees, and Migrants to come together, practice music and express themselves creatively alongside local musicians.
The important work they do has been under threat by challenges such as seeking appropriate venue spaces to practice, lack of funding and awareness and, of course, the Covid-19 lockdown.
We believe that the tracks presented on the compilation are indicative of the diverse and vibrant range of musical talent that is on offer in the North East, and would be a great jumping off point for anyone wishing to explore up and coming artists in the region.
Examples of contributors include: BBC Introducing’s pop punk favorites bigfatbig, rock powerhouses Sing Again Syren, captivating saxophonist Thomas Dixon and infectious indie outfit Mt. Misery. For more information about this project please email:
